Stou Plastira (Pernos) (est. 1968)
“Stou Plastira” (Pernos) Historic Café in the village of Apollonas in Rhodes, is housed in a building of special Italian architecture, created by the architect Dimitrios Margellos. The space is impressively large, considering the initial goal of hosting events. People of arts and letters have always frequented the Cafe.
The Cafe was originally called “Pernos” (- kermes oak – named after the tree standing next to it), but was recently renamed “Stou Plastira”. Tassos Palazis, the current owner, aimed at keeping the history of the Café alive, while creating a special space – museum, which would function as an attraction for visitors. Thus, the Cafe is home to antique objects and relics visitors can admire, while also hosts three thematic sections (Shoemaker, Barber and Grocery), copies of “shops” which operated in the past in the “renowned” Cafes of Greece. The main lounge of the Café is dominated by an Italian atmosphere with authentic items from the 20’s.
The Cafe witnesses a strong cultural activity. Numerous theatrical performances, musical-theatrical storytelling, puppet theaters, film screenings, live lectures, book presentations, and other events constitute an integral part of its culture.
