Café Kipos (est. 1870)
The historic café “Kipos” (garden) in Chania Crete, is situated in the town’s municipal garden.
Today, after almost one and a half centuries of presence, “Kipos” in its natural calm environment, continues to constitute a cultural, historic and social reference point for the town of Chania.
Many important personalities have visited its premises, such as Eleftherios Venizelos, Nikos Kazantzakis, Sofoklis Venizelos, artists and intelectuals, while numerous cultural events like music nights, book presentations, etc., have been and continue to be organized with success.
Vasilis Stathakis took over the business in 1988. With respect to tradition and care, he created the first full service catering company in Crete, named “Kipos Catering”.
In 2005, “Kipos” successfully organized the first greek waffle night, while the title “Waffle’s House”, obtained through franchise, was added to the café’s logo. In August 2013, the historic photography exhibition regarding the history of the premises since its establishment in 1870 until today, opened for the public. The exhibition is permanently displayed in the café, thus enriching the unique identity and atmosphere of the café.
In October 2012, Vasilis Stathakis was informed by the Historical Archive of Crete and the Chania Chamber of Commerce and Industry, that “Kipos” was the only historic café in Greece. This was the spark that inspired the creation of the European Historic Cafés Association.
