Café Calcinha (est. 1929)
The Café Calcinha, inaugurated under the name Café Central, opened to the public in 1929 and was founded by José Domingos Cavaco, whose nickname was “Calcinha”.
Café Calcinha is modelled after a Brazilian coffee shop from the same time period. The art-deco interior and Brazilian wood features were restored to their original glory.
In the esplanade area, there is a sculpture executed by Master Lagoa Henriques representing the popular poet António Aleixo, born in Vila Real de Santo António in 1889 and who came to live in Loulé in 1906, where he died on 18th February 1899.
It was in this café that he made some famous declamations of his poems.
