The Tea/Torrefazione Moderna Caffè (est. c1892)
Historical notes on the place.
Refreshing the body and spirit of the people of Turin, it seems, was the destiny of the place that hosts The Tea. Today a point of reference for true tea connoisseurs, yesterday a prestigious roasting shop, even mentioned in the volume “Historical shops and places of Turin” published by the historical archive of the City of Turin in 2006: “The scent of roasted coffee was already spreading around this place at the end of the nineteenth century, which every day sold generous quantities of blends of every quality, displayed in full view next to the appropriate roaster.”
The first historical reference relating to trade in this corner of Turin, formerly Via del Senato, appears in the 1892 Italian Yearbook, in the section “Piedmont – Province and District of Turin” where Via corte d'Appello, 2 is also listed in the list of Turin businesses in the category “Grocery and colonial shops”
It is 1920 and the grocery store changes ownership to be completely renovated with roasting, sale and serving of coffee.
The adjective “Modern” that still stands out on the over one hundred year old sign of the Torrefazione was chosen precisely to highlight the change and the novelty: thanks to the introduction of the first machines for roasting coffee. Without forgetting however some 25 kilo crates of black tea from Sri Lanka half hidden behind the entrance door…
But something would change within a few years thanks to the Carità-Longo family.
